So, of the many athletic programs at OU, gymnastics has always been one of the more foreign sports to me. Luckily, I have my own expert to help me through the process.
Tonight, Kelsey and I attended (5)OU Gymnastics vs. (2)Michigan. Naturally, I brought my camera and Kelsey also brought her trusty D50 for some fun shooting. I had a great time learning more about gymnastics and experiencing something I've never experienced. The closest I've come to experiencing gymnastics is reading about...that one guy during the Olympics (sorry, don't remember his name). Of course, while on my curious stint, I am currently watching figure skating (another foreign sport) with Kelsey.
What an eye opener. I have a new found respect for the importance of technique and training since so much is required. I guess this is just a good example of the importance of those things no matter what you do. Kelsey was talking about different things during the meet, and it just reminded me of how much life requires one's absolute concentration.
Speaking of absolute concentration, since this was my first time shooting gymnastics, I didn't do very well. Old film photographers once used this rule of thumb: in certain events, you should have at least one useable shot per role (24 frames). With the dawn of digital, that number gets a bit lost with the extremely fast shooting burst capabilities of pro cameras. But, the rule still applies, one of 24. Tonight, I shot 375 and only 27 were useable. That's about seven percent. Not good. Of course, I was in the stands and this was my first time, so I won't beat myself too much.
Anyway, here are a few from the night.
